Since 1854, the monks of Saint Meinrad Archabbey have lived the Benedictine rhythm of ora et labora, prayer and work.
Founded by monks from Einsiedeln Abbey in Switzerland, Saint Meinrad Archabbey was established in southern Indiana to serve the pastoral needs of the local German-speaking community and to prepare men for the priesthood. That mission of prayer, education, and service continues to define every aspect of Saint Meinrad today.
From its earliest days, Benedictine life at Saint Meinrad has been shaped by humility and simplicity. This spirit was evident even in the monastery carpenter shop, where the monks’ caskets were crafted with care and reverence, either by their own hands or by skilled local craftsmen. This tradition continues today through Abbey Caskets, a ministry of Saint Meinrad. The original casket design brought from Einsiedeln Abbey continues to inspire our Monastic Casket, which is handcrafted on the grounds of the Archabbey. For generations, monks have been laid to rest in these wooden caskets, simple in form, yet rich in meaning.
Over time, visitors attending monastic funerals were moved by the simple beauty and meaning of the monks’ caskets. Many began requesting similar caskets for their own families. In response, Abbey Caskets was established in 1999, sharing this tradition beyond the monastery while helping sustain the Archabbey’s mission.
Fr. Adrian Burke, OSB, reflects: “As a Benedictine monastic community, Saint Meinrad Archabbey seeks to live in a spirit of humble simplicity. We monks strive to care for the land entrusted to us, to honor the rich culture of our region, and to bear witness to our Catholic faith through lives of prayerful service. This commitment is expressed in many ways: through the formation we offer in our Seminary and School of Theology, through our ministries of hospitality and retreat, and simply by providing a place of quiet where guests can find rest, reflect, and encounter God in prayer.
Our dedication to God shapes every aspect of our life and work. In serving others, we seek to serve Christ, who meets us in our neighbor. Abbey Caskets is one expression of this mission. By engaging the local tradition of fine woodworking, we are able to accompany families during times of loss with compassion and dignity, a work that also provides revenue that supports our community and its various ministries. Our caskets and urns reflect our monastic values of simplicity and reverence, crafted with care to honor the sacred remains of each person who has died.”
Today, every casket and urn is made on-site by dedicated lay co-workers and blessed by the Archabbot, reflecting the monks’ ongoing spiritual connection to this sacred work. Each handcrafted piece carries forward Benedictine values of prayer and craftsmanship and is rooted in the life and mission of Saint Meinrad.
